My PDA - an HP iPAQ 4155

Click on the Podomatic icon to listen to what I reinstalled first after deleting all the programs and some files as well, I suppose. It's three minutes long and mentions these products

Using your Pocket PC PDA to record mp3 files

I was interested in finding a way to record mp3 files directly and searching the internet brought me to this:

NoteM for Pocket PC 2003 (and 2002)
http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedia/notem.shtml
Description:
Voice Notes Recorder with MP3 encoding (NoteM) was implemented as an alternative to build-in Notes application’s voice recording feature.
It gives you approximately 5.5 compression rate (for Low bitrate option) as compared to Notes default recording mode (8-bit 11.025kHz mono PCM), with the same (or even better) perceptual quality.
Higher bitrates are also available (you can even record music).
The user interface also was implemented as similar as possible to Notes GUI.
Pocket PC 2002 users can download v1.10  (736 KB).

I have downloaded it and installed it and recorded a couple of samples and it looks very useful.

Philips Voice Tracer digital recorder and mp3 files

I bought a Philips Vice Tracer 7650 last summer hoping to interview people at a conference and post the files to the conference blog I was working on. This plan hit a major problem when I discovered that far from having a computer to use provided by the organisation for me to use throughout the conference, in fact I had to fight for access to some shared laptops or wait until the offices closed in the evening to use a desktop PC. So I couldn't install the software for the digital recorder, I couldn't get access to a computer when I needed it and as a result I didn't even try to get any interviews... pity.

Now I have got bitten by the podcasting bug and am looking at the easiest way to record my voice again and how to make mp3 files as quickly as possible. Here is an adapted version of a letter I sent to

NCH Swift Sound http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html :

As it turns out I haven't been able to use the software as what I wanted from it was a one-step way to convert my 'DSS?' files generated on my Philips 7650 voice tracer into mp3 files. At present I have to go through a two step process using first the Voice Tracer download manager to convert the 'sp' files to .wav files and then WaveNET http://www.phoenixmediasoft.com/ to convert these to .mp3 files.

I followed their FAQs about only using 'sp' files, I downloaded the 'DSS' codec but I suspect that the Philips realisation of 'DSS' is non-standard. I tested a free downloadable DSS player from Olympus and tried to play some of my 'sp' Philips files through it but without success. (http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/software_results.asp?id=347&os=w Click on:

 DSS Player Lite software
Listen to files recorded in DSS, WAV or VAL formats. (self-extracting .exe file 2.11MB) (11/02))

I have no idea whether Philips digital recorders represent a worthwhile segment of the market, but needless to say I would be interested to know if anyone knows of a free way to make that possible.

an mp3 file from another server

I've put copies of all the files I had tried before on another server.

Here is a link to the first. Let's see if it works.

I'll ping FeedBurner to speed up the process in a moment.

"My Podcast isn't working" What's wrong - link to feedburner forum

Dick from the Feedburner Team suggests that my problems may be with my ISP- see here

So I will try storing an mp3 file on another server and see if that works.

Test yourself on irregular verbs on a Pocket PC and maybe on a Palm?

I adapted my javascript exercise to fit the screen of my iPAQ 4150. You can download it here That way you can test youself on a choice of 7 levels of irregular verbs or any combination of levels.

The great thing is that you don't need to type anything - all you do is click on buttons.

Obviously, you don't need to be connected to the internet if you download the file.

See how it works and of course I would love to know how it works on a Palm.

I've tried various ways of adding sound files to this Blog, but haven't succeeded in getting them to show up as enclosures

The only mp3 that shows up is the one from Eric Rice!
Maybe if I add a link to am mp3 file here mine will be added too.

This is a short sound file.
